Clinical Significance

Potassium measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of hypokalemia (metabolic alkalosis/acidosis or the absence of acid-base disturbances), hyperkalemia (overadministration of potassium, acidosis, or crush injuries), renal failure, Addison's disesae or other diseases involving electrolyte imbalance.
