Test Code WNDC Culture, Wound (Aerobic)
Additional Codes
EPIC | LAB4523 |
Purpose
For the detection of bacteria responsible for skin and soft tissue infections. Other sources include mucous membranes, pus and exudates. Interpretation of microbial cultures taken from open skin wounds may be compromised because these surfaces often harbor a variety of skin flora. Proper disinfection prior to specimen collection will ensure the organism obtained for culture is more likely to be a significant pathogen. The quality of the specimen will be assessed by Gram stain and will be used to limit the number of organisms worked up from mixed cultures.
Methodology
Conventional culture (includes gram stain).
Sample Type
Sterile swab (Culturette/Anaerobic)
Specimen Stability
Temperature | Time |
---|---|
Ambient (18-25°C) | 24 hours* |
Refrigerated (2-8°C) | N/A |
Frozen (-15 to -20°C) | N/A |
*Under 3 hours transit time of swabs is recommended since studies show a gradual decrease in viability of certain organisms for transit times exceeding 3 hours.
Rejection Criteria
- Samples outside of stability limits.
- Sample collection with inappropriate swab type.
- Samples that have been refrigerated or frozen.
