Test Code ANERC Culture, Anaerobic

Important Note

DO NOT send glass anaerobic specimen collectoin swabs through the pneumatic tube system!

Specimens submitted for anaerobic testing must be checked for sufficient quality to provide an interpretable result. Bone, tissue, fluid, abscess aspirate, anaerobic swabs, and surgical specimens are all acceptable sample types. If a swab specimen is submitted, it must be in an anaerobic collection device and the indicator at the bottom must be white to indicate an anaerobic environment is present. If a bone, tissue, fluid, or aspirate specimen is submitted, the exposure to air must be limited and set-up of the culture should happen within 30 minutes of collection time. Anaerobic specimens should never be refrigerated.Specimens submitted for anaerobic testing must be checked for sufficient quality to provide an interpretable result. Purpose

For the detection of bacteria responsible for infections of surgical specimens, deep tissues, pus and wounds.  Increased surveillance for Anaerobic organisms.  Do NOT submit surface or superficial cultures for Anaerobic Culture.  The quality of the specimen will be assessed by Gram stain and will be used to limit the number of organisms worked up from mixed cultures.

Methodology

Conventional culture (includes gram stain).

Sample Type

  • Anaerobic Culture Swab (2 hour stability)
  • Bone
  • Tissue
  • Abscess aspirate
  • Non-swab surgical specimens (30 minute stability)
