Test Code PTT Activated Partial Thromboplastin (APTT)

Additional Codes

EPIC LAB4017

Synonyms

  • PTT
  • APTT

Clinical Significance

Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) is used for the evaluation of the intrinsic coagulation pathway, APTT substitution test, and the monitoring of heparin therapy. Prolonged clotting times may be observed in the following situations: deficiency of Factors II, V, VIII, IX, X , XI, XII or fibrinogen, liver diseases, vitamin K deficiency, presence of heparin, lupus anticoagulant or other inhibitor.

Methodology

A plasma sample is incubated with an optimal quantity of phospholipids and a negatively charged contact activator which initiates the activation of the intrinsic coagulation pathway. Calcium is added after incubation at 37°C for a specific period of time, and the time for clot formation is measured.

Sample Type

Preferred Sample Type
Light blue top - Na Citrate Plasma

Centrifuge: Yes

Specimen Minimum Volume

0.5 mL

NOTE: Na Citrate Blue top tubes require that the tube is filled adequately to maintain the 9:1 blood to anticoagulant ratio.

Ambient (18-25°C) (store) 4 hours
Refrigerated (2-8°C) N/A
Frozen (<-20°C) 14 days

NOTE: Separate plasma from cells within 2 hours
