Test Code RBCM RBC Morphology
Additional Codes
Lab Order Only
Purpose
Automated analyzers are limited in the ability to reveal morphological features of blood cells. An automated analyzer will display "instrument flags" relating to abnormal findings in cell size, volume, unexpected populations or unavailable data/counts. Staining of the peripheral blood smear allows the rapid differentiation of morphological cell types. Observation of morphological characteristics and abnormalities of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets are made.
Methodology
Wright stained peripheral smear with Microscopic examination and interpretation.
