Purpose

The cellular material of hair, skin, or nail specimens may mask fungal elements when observed microscopically. Potassium hydroxide (KOH) will disolve the keratin in these specimens making any fungi more visible; thus aiding in the diagnosis of tissue fungal infections.

  • Particularly cellular sputum, vaginal secretions, or tissues may also be used.

Positive:   Type of mycologic element seen (hyphae, arthroconidia, yeast, etc.)

Negative:  No fungal elements seen

Rejection Criteria

  • Samples not properly labeled (2 patient identifiers required)
